New water meters by 31st January
Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has extended the last date for installation of new water meters by one more month since it did not receive a positive response to its drive that was launched last year. The extension, officials say, was given since consumers were facing problems in procuring the specified type of meters.
Officials say the meters are now available in the market and if consumers do not get them installed by January 31 the water supply will be disconnected.
Sources say the water utility has been losing crores through non-metered connections and also due to faulty meters because billing takes places through a system of average consumption. Out of 17 lakh connections, there are about five lakh connections with faulty meters and about a lakh of nonmetered connections. Since 2005, the utility has lost approximately Rs 174 crore by adopting the practice of billing based on average consumption.
The meters were supposed to be in place by March 2008, but the deadline has since been extended several times.
``Initially, consumers were reluctant to install these meters, but with DJB issuing an ultimatum, the response been very good. There was a shortage of the specified magnetic multi-jet meters in the market, but now these meters are available. We have extended the deadline so that those who faced problems in getting the meters earlier can install it now. With revised tariff now in place, consumers who do not install such meters by January 31 will be charged on the basis of actual amount of water consumed,'' said an official.
According to sources, the water meters that have been specified by DJB are B class, multi-jet magnetically coupled, inferential type with bronze or brass body certified by ISI/ISO. They can be purchased from any hardware store in Delhi. The meters carry a certificate with a unique identification number. The installation of these meters has to be done only by a licensed DJB plumber. Once the installation is complete, a report has to be submitted to the respective zonal revenue official.

Now even Water will cut your pockets
A hike of over 50 per cent in water tariff that was approved by the Delhi government last month has come into force from January 1. Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit had announced the hike in December.
From January 1, those using up to 10 kilolitres (1,000 litres) of water will have to pay Rs 82 -- up from the existing Rs 52.
Consumption between 11 and 20 kl will cost Rs 180, up from Rs 82; the slab of 30 kl is now priced at Rs 470, up from Rs 187. The charges for every kilolitre above 30 kl will cost Rs 25.
The revision in water rates has also abolished the existing monthly provision of 6,000 litres (initial consumption) of free water to every household.

Notice on Ultrasound machines
The Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PNDT) Act bans the use of technology -- such as ultrasounds and sonograms - and techniques that lead to foeticide.
Better access to diagnostic technology has led to India's sex ratio to fall rapidly from 945 in 1991 to 927 in 2001. The natural sex ratio at birth is 940-950 girls per 1,000 boys.

Brave effort of Mrs. Meera Sabharwal, President RWA, Geeta Colony
Mrs. Meera Sabharwal saw few suspicious looking persons in Geeta colony. While challenging them and asking for their identity, she tried to call the police and her husband tried his best to catch them. But in the scuffle, only one person was caught by them & rest fled from the scene. The suspicious person was later handed over to the police. We congratulate Mrs. Meera Sabharwal & her husband on this courageous effort.

Retail sugar prices in Delhi moving closer to Rs 50/kg
New Delhi: Retail sugar price in Delhi is inching closer to the Rs 50-per kg mark with rates moving up by nearly Rs 1 everyday since January 1.
The sweetener became costlier by Rs 1 to Rs 45 a kg on January 7 from Rs 44 per kg the previous day, according to the government data.
Sugar prices have more than doubled from the Rs 21 level from beginning of the last year, mainly due to lower production.
Since the beginning of the year, sugar has become dearer by over 15% or Rs 6 per kg.
In the wholesale market of New Delhi , sugar was trading at Rs 44.5 per kg on Thursday and therefore, the retail prices are expected to firm up further.
Rising sugar prices are hurting not only the common man but also sweetmeat makers, ice-cream manufacturers, beverage producers and confectioneries. Bulk users make up for 60% of the total sugar demand.
While the industry attributes the recent spurt in sugar prices to firm global rates which have made imports costlier, traders are blaming it to "low" release of sugar by the government in the open market for January quota.
Restriction put by the Uttar Pradesh government on imported raw sugar in view of protest from cane farmers during October-November last year, is also fuelling the price rise.
Traders said around 1.5 million tonne of raw sugar is locked in the Indian ports because of UP government’s decision to ban the processing of imported raw sugar in the state.
“This has further aggravated the supply shortage as most big mills who have the capacity to process imported raw sugar into whites are not able to do so,” a miller from the state said.
He said that new import contracts are not being entered into as processors are not confident about the processing.
In 2008-09 (October-September), sugar production slumped to 14.7 million tonne from 26.4 million tonne in the previous season. The annual requirement of India , the world's largest consumer, is 23 mt.
Encouraged by strong demand from India, the world’s largest consumer of the sweetener, refined sugar prices for March delivery rose to $729 per tonne on the Liffe exchange this week, a level last seen in 1989, similarly raw sugar for the same month delivery jumped to 28.90 cents a pound, its highest level since 1981.
Meanwhile, the central government has gone into a war footing...

Anand Vihar line opens for public today
NEW DELHI: Over 60,000 residents of east Delhi are expected to switch to Delhi Metro’s new Yamuna Bank-Anand Vihar stretch for their dailycommute from Thursday when the line will be thrown open to the public.
The stretch was flagged off by Union urban development minister Jaipal Reddy and chief minister Shiela Dikshit on Wednesday. This is the first Metro line to open this year. But from now on, a new Metro line will open every other month till September. Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) managing director E Sreedharan said the Inderlok-Mundka stretch will open next month.
From 6 am on Thursday, alternate trains from Dwarka will head for Anand Vihar and Noida City Centre respectively. The Metro station at Yamuna Bank will serve as an important interchange between the two lines, which are an extension of the existing Line 3. The 6.25 km-long Anand Vihar-Yamuna Bank stretch runs fully elevated along Vikas Marg which has a traffic volume of over 1.5 lakh vehicles daily. It is expected to take a considerable load off traffic on the main road as it passes through densely-populated residential and commercial areas.
The line has five stops at Laxmi Nagar, Nirman Vihar, Preet Vihar, Karkardooma and Anand Vihar. All the stations will also double up as foot overbridges (FOB) which pedestrians can use to cross the road without entering the paid area of the station. The Metro will traverse the distance between Yamuna Bank and Anand Vihar in 11 minutes as against the travel time of about 45 minutes by road. Commuters will be able to park their vehicles at parking lots provided at Karkardooma, Anand Vihar and Yamuna Bank stations.
The Metro station at Anand Vihar is coming up in an integrated transport terminal which also houses an ISBT and a railway station. This stop is expected to be one of the busiest stations on the line as it will also cater to inter-state traffic from UP till this Metro line is extended by 2.3 km to enter Ghaziabad.

Mr. Jeet Kumar from Pocket-3, Mayur Vihar-1. Delhi-110091
Now after app 29-30 years the condition of our so called Rain water OPEN Drains on both the sides of our flats remaining same reminds me of Mohan-jo-daro and Harrapa civilization open drain system.
We have been meeting through our RWA to our Councilors, MLAs, MCD offices and officers to get the drains COVERED with a FLOw ; the only reply / answer from MCD officers is " All such drains shall remain open only " as there is no law or provision in MCD to have it covered in Trans Yamuna in Trilokpuri and our flats are DDA flats Trilokpuri in the record, " what is there in the name"
( Mayur Vihar Pocket-3 Phase-1)?
Will any one come forward to give a logistic reply to the residents as to why we are made to live under such useless, dirty, sick conditions?
Let us have an open discussions / meetings on the spot in our Pocket-3 Mayur Vihar-1 with any civic authority to solve this problem.

Dr. V.Srinivasan from Pocket-1, Mayur Vihar-1, Delhi-110091
This is to bring to your and the concerned authorities’ notice the appalling state of civic infrastructure in the national capital of India.
We have been living in the colony named Mayur Vihar-1, Pocket-1 for the last 20 years. This is concerning our block of houses from 13-16( applicable to nearby blocks also).
Here there are two drains on either side of the houses that are perpetually full of stagnant, dirty water. One can, on any day see thousands of mosquitoes breeding on the surface in broad daylight. This drain is meant for rain water which is only seasonal. Once upon a time it used to be dry now due to some faulty road engineering (somewhere!) there is no outlet for the water to drain consequently the stagnant water breeds mosquitoes and emanates foul smell. This season the houses have been swarmed by mosquitoes leading to mosquito borne diseases.
On a personal note I am a medical practitioner working in this area for many years. I am down with malaria and missing my pledged duty of seeing suffering citizens. In this year 2010 if this is the condition of our civil engineering skills where drains do not drain and we consciously breed vectors to spread disease, our dream of becoming a global power (super!!) at the end of the decade will remain wishful thinking.
P.S This condition persists despite numerous complaints to local municipal councilor and efforts of the local RWA. This problem has also been highlighted in the respected local citizen newspaper The Mayur Infomail.
I append the appalling state in picture form attached with the mail.
