Water Problem and DJB

Water shortage in delhi is known to DJB and political bosses and is there fore not a new phenomenon.
Solution may invole long term strategy and expenditure of crores of rupees.
But baffling is that tube wells functional in almost all residential societies and even services were handed over to MCD, were functional but were made in operative just a few years ago.
Such tubewells were boosting and to some extent mitigating water shortage.
Unfortunately, some decision at policy maker level has been taken without consideration of discomfort to citizen.
Could any body throw light as to how DJB COULD BE MADE TO REALISE THEIR FOLLY.

Groundwater Bill opposed

Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly V. K. Malhotra has said that about 1,700 unauthorised colonies and slums would be deprived of water if the Delhi Government introduces the groundwater Bill.
Reacting to the proposed Bill, Prof. Malhotra said these colonies are dependent on groundwater for their daily needs.

"While the Government's concern over the falling levels of groundwater is shared by all, it is equally true that there has been no serious attempt by it to help raise the groundwater level. Now, by suddenly introducing the groundwater Bill, the Government will effectively cut off the only source of water for hundreds of colonies across the city," he said.

Prof. Malhotra said the Chief Minister, who is also the chairperson of the Delhi Jal Board, has failed comprehensively in improving its management and working: "Shortage of water is the single most important issue for most people, particularly those living in South Delhi. The Chief Minister has also failed to curb the growing menace of the tanker mafia in the city."

No More 24X7 Groundwater Supply For Parched Delhiites

Residents of multi- storey buildings and owners of farmhouses and hotels in the city could have a tough time in the days ahead.

Consumption of uninterrupted round-the-clock ground- water will soon be a matter of the past for them.

Concerned about the fast depleting water table, the department of Environment, Delhi Government has decided to show no mercy to residents who illegally draw groundwa- ter by installing borewells or tubewells.

The department, through a circular issued on May 18, has ordered formation of an advisory committee at each revenue area to check violations and seal illegal wells, seize drilling rigs and permanently disconnect water supply.

Each committee will be headed by a Deputy Commissioner (Revenue). "After the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) restricted the supply of water, the illegal drawing of groundwater through borewells and tubewells has increased enormously," said a senior DJB officer.

There is simply not enough water in Delhi, to support any more growth.....

Hitting out at the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) for "sanctioning mass building and construction across the city without factoring in the water availability" DJB chief Ramesh Negi said: "In wake of the city's water woes and a total hydrological imbalance, there has to be an end to the vertical growth. The DDA should ban further growth. Unless this is done, the city can never have an equitable water supply." There is "simply not enough water in Delhi", to support any more growth, he told Newsline.
EXCERPTS FROM NEWS PUBLISHED IN INDIAN EXPRESS : ONLY 1 WATER CONNECTION PER FLAT : DELHI JAL BOARD ( DJB ) : Link in headline above for detailed news, with thanks to Indian Express.

OUR QUESTIONS :
If there is not enough water in Delhi to support any more growth and it's being said by none other than DJB Chief Mr Ramesh Negi, than how the builders lobby is on it's peak in almost every part of the city ? Why the water harvesting is not being enforced, even though, normal to heavy rains are being expected this season ? Why the water is being wasted from various leakages in DJB pipes ? Who is responsible for this mismanagement ? Your most valued comments please.

Only 1 Water Connection Per Flat: Delhi Jal Board (DJB)

Finding it difficult to cope with the demands of vertical growth of the city, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has decided not to give water connections to each dwelling unit in a multi-storeyed apartment block. Instead, the DJB will now provide only one connection to a block of flats which has more than four floors.

MUST READ NEWS : Survey finds water contaminated

NGOs Find 2 Of 53 Samples Potable, Rest Contain Heavy Metals & Pesticides

An analysis of Delhi's water, carried out by the NGOs Hazards Centre and Water Aid, has thrown up startling results. Of the 53 samples that were tested, only two were found to be potable. The rest were contaminated in varying degrees with heavy metals, faecal coliform, flouride and even pesticides.

The study, carried out over last year, was made public on Tuesday. Dr Ishaprasad Bhagwat, director, programme operations of Water Aid, told TOI that while the results of the study were quite alarming, this was just an initial report that needed more followup action. ``The study is indicative of the extent of the problem the city is facing. A lot more work needs to be done. We will submit the study to DJB shortly,'' he said.

Overflowing tanks: VK puts lid

NEW DELHI: Residents of Vasant Kunj and Delhi Jal Board (DJB) will launch a unique initiative on Saturday to stop wastage of water.

Four volunteers — called jal rakshaks — from each pocket will point out overflowing water tanks to the residents responsible for it. After three warnings, which will include offers of help with phone numbers of plumbers who can fix the problem, the jal rakshaks will forward a complaint to DJB, which will then initiate punitive action.

Vasant Kunj has around 19,000 flats and a colony-run project of this kind, it is estimated, will end up saving around 1 lakh kilolitres of water every day. The project has been conceived by FORCE, an NGO working for water conservation, with DJB as a partner. Jyoti Sharma, FORCE president, said they had used jal rakshaks before but the process had never been very formal. ''Now it will be. Our primary aim is to make Vasant Kunj a 'water-wise' colony. When the model becomes a success, hopefully in the next six months, DJB will use it in other colonies,'' said Sharma.

The project will also involve members of the local branch of Innerwheel Club, an organization linked to Rotary International. ''Each jal rakshak team will include a member of the club. They will rope in children from each pocket,'' Sharma said. ''These children will perform street plays to spread the message.”

Last year, the pocket B-1 RWA had started a programme called Water Warriors, in which colony children went about doing what the jal rakshaks will do.

Vasant Kunj has 30 residential pockets and the colony has been in the news ever since people moved in because of scarcity of water. The situation though has improved somewhat since Vasant Kunj started getting water from Sonia Vihar. However, even as people from other less privileged areas like the colony of Sangam Vihar hold demonstrations for water, many residents here have been oblivious to overflowing of their tanks.

Jal Board Plans To `Rationalise Supply'

With thanks : source : Indian Express

Detailed news can be viewed from original link from the headline above.

Dirty Drinking water straight from Dhobi Ghat ?

Areas in the first DLF colony, Krishna nagar, are facing the acute problem of Dirty & Smelly drinking water. For the last few months, the colour of water changes every day, from black to yellow to earthen & vice versa with bacteria & unknown particles as well with soapy effects as it has come not from the pipes of DJB but from any Dhobi Ghat. We can not use it for drinking or washing clothes & utencils, or for a bath and therefore, none would like to take it even free of cost. But the agony is that we are purchasing it from DJB by paying monthly bills.

The area MLA,  Dr. Harshvardhan visited us and saw the condition of water a few days ago, while the DELHI AAJ TAK was airing a live show on Dirty water. He made a dozen calls to various DJB officials .  We are thankful for his efforts but so far the quality of water remains same, most of the time.

We are thankful to Delhi Government for making dozens of changes in the East Delhi Map. The standard of living  has definitely improved a lot. But if Govt could give more instructions to  the concerned officials for keeping an eye on the basic civic problems, we will be thankful. We have great hopes from our MP Mr Sandeep Dikshit.

Water crisis and DJB

Pigeon closes eyes thinking cat has walked away. But when the cat pounces upon i do not know whether pigeon realises its folly or not.
DJB was created thinking what ails delhi citizens on water front shall be cured. The myth has exploded like a bad joke. It is beyond imagination that a part of delhi will be water starved. WATER NOT AVAILABLE EVEN FOR ONE HOUR...and we think ourselves to be advanced city like any other city of the world.
DJB MUST APOLOGISE FOR THIS LAPSE MAKING CITIZENS BEGGARS FOR WATER.
DJB must daily publish in news papers and on tv channels, areas which are water starved and how long this situation will last. Are they loking for rain GOD?
Water harvesting has not been adopted by MCD OR DELHI ADMINISTRATION OR EVEN CENTRAL GOVERNMENT except big ads in news papers.
Let all government run or aided school premises, government offices be used for water harvesting.
Water needs to be brought from adjacent states and it is no use blaming political setups.
CWG are approaching. DJB must act swiftly.

Dirty, smelly water in F Block, Krishna nagar

Now a days, the residents of F Block, Krishna nagar, are suffering from the Stomach Ailments. Some have extreme gastric problems & some others have loose motions as well stomach pain. All this is due to the dirty, smelly water being supplied in the Taps by the Jal Board. Some times the water is so dirty that you can match it with nullah. When it is not so dirty, it is so smelly that even after Filtering it, it is not drinkable.

Yesterday, we spoke to Mr Kapil Kapoor, a local resident. He said, " its better for the kids to drink Cold drinks instead of the Tap water as water quality is really bad, even though, the cold drinks are no good for health". Mrs. Raj Rani Ahuja from the same area, exhibited a glass of dirty water. Mrs. Pooja Dhawan said that we can not drink this water, even after properly filtering.

We request to our Area MLA Dr Harshvardhan as well MCD Councillor Dr. Monga, to please look into matter in an urgency.

DJB Survey To Check Quality Of Its Service

As part of its self-assessment procedure, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has decided to conduct a door-to-door survey of households in Delhi to determine the quality of four basic services being provided by it-- water supply, drainage, solid waste management and sewerage.
The survey, which might take one year for completion, will be outsourced to a private company.
According to DJB officials, the process of inviting tenders for the survey will be completed in the next one month. The officials said that collecting data from the residents might take more than six months.
"The data will then be analysed and a colony-wise report will be prepared," said a senior official of the DJB.

Water scarcity in delhi and intentioanal neglect of society tube wells

We read that next war could be on account of sharing of water between nations. Suggestions have been floated like slicing ice berg and towing them to water scacity area.
Delhi is facing acute water shortage and even winter months are no exception.
But strangely some time back a decision had been wrongly taken to keep tube wells of societies in operative.
I refer to our Delhi Officer's House Building Society Ltd Madhuvan New Delhi 110092.
Society handed over potable water supply arrangements to MCD in 1995 and our filtered water supply pump had been operational for couple of years. Mr.Sudhir pump operator was on MCD pay role for operation of tube well.
Now i am informed that tube well along with water filterational equipment has been lying inoperational because DJB has taken some decision not to operate these tube wells.
There could be hundreds of such installations through out delhi. To not to augment water supply arrangements is beyond my thinking.
I fervently appeal that all societies and others having such arrangements must impress upon our elected representatives and DJB AUTHORITIES TO MAKE THESE TUBE WELLS OPERATIONAL and help to reduce water scacity.
