Discoms not okay with DERC plan

NEW DELHI: Discoms have asked for implementation of overall power purchase adjustment formula on a monthly basis in a recent tariff petition for financial year 2012-13. The reason for this, say sources, is that the discoms are not satisfied with the recent fuel adjustment formula granted to them by regulatory body Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC).

This will pass on variations in power cost to consumers every month. Discoms say fuel adjustment formula was limited to certain generation stations and did not cover fixed and variable costs they had to pay. "The power purchase adjustment formula is due on us following an order from the Appellate Tribunal of Electricity. Fuel adjustment is just a part of it,'' said a discom official

The power companies, however, said that since they had made all long term tie-ups for power in 2012, there was little chance that cost of peak power procurement in summers would be passed on to consumers.

"All arrangements are long-term,'' said BSES officials. A verdict on their petition to DERC is expected in the coming months. DERC on Tuesday brought about a 5% hike in tariff across the city to adjust power purchase costs for distribution licensees. The new hike will come into effect from February 1 and will be charged for three months ending April 30, 2012, following which the process for fuel price adjustment for next three months will be again initiated.
