East Delhi residents suffer

While trash covered the streets and garbage dumps overflowed in East Delhi on Monday, residents had to bear the brunt of the ongoing strike by municipal sanitation workers.

Safai karamcharis of the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) have been on strike since June 2. They have been demanding wages for the months of April and May. The BJP-led municipal corporations have accused the Delhi government of withholding funds. However, the Aam Aadmi Party-led government has alleged that the civic bodies have diverted funds meant for salaries elsewhere.

Even as the political stalemate continues, East Delhi residents say they are stuck in the middle.

Savita Gupta (75), a resident of Mayur Vihar Phase-I, said: “The dhalaos are spilling over with garbage and the stench has become unbearable.”

East Delhi RWAs Joint Front Federation president B.S. Vohra said there are huge mounds of trash outside the homes of residents of Azad Nagar, Geeta Colony, Krishna Nagar, Yamuna Pushta and Shastri Park. “East Delhi has become a garbage bin,” he added.

World Environment Day - Pollution issues discussed with CM !

Yesterday ( on 3rd June ), we had a meeting with CM Arvind Kejriwal on the Delhi Budget. Keeping in mind the worsening situation of Delhi on the Pollution front, our first three demands ( out of 13 ), were absolutely related to the Pollution as well Radiation from Mobile Towers & the UV Index, as below :

1.   The invisible danger of UV Index has reached Delhi. Though our Experts say its around 8 presently, all the foreign institutes have mentioned, that, its 11 plus in Delhi. Therefore, we require UV Index monitoring system in Delhi with Alarms to save the lives of scores of residents.

2. Delhi has become the most polluted city of the world & therefore, Pollution monitoring systems must be installed in every assembly seat to keep on tracking the pollution levels regularly. These monitoring systems must be under the direct control of committees of local RWAs, so that, any warning issues could be raised immediately.

3.   Radiation from Mobile Towers is also a cause of concern & various RWAs are regularly raising the issue. Govt must do routine checks of various mobile towers & its reports must be uploaded on the Delhi Govt websites. Moreover, there must be no charges for checking the radiation levels of any mobile tower in the city, if forwarded by any of the registered RWAs.

We can just hope that most of the points out of our 13 demands will be accepted & approved for budget allocation for Delhi. Let's see what comes out on the Budget day.

With best regards,
