The Nobel Peace Prize for 2014 !

Congratulations to Sh Kailash Satyarthi & Malala Yousafzay for the Nobel Peace prize 2014. A great achievement at the time when both the countries are almost at War. The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2014 is to be awarded to Kailash Satyarthi and Malala Yousafzay for their struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the right of all children to education.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee, says, " Showing great personal courage, Kailash Satyarthi, maintaining Gandhi’s tradition, has headed various forms of protests and demonstrations, all peaceful, focusing on the grave exploitation of children for financial gain.  He has also contributed to the development of important international conventions on children’s rights".

The Norwegian Nobel committee adds, " Despite her youth, Malala Yousafzay has already fought for several years for the right of girls to education, and has shown by example that children and young people, too, can contribute to improving their own situations.  This she has done under the most dangerous circumstances.  Through her heroic struggle she has become a leading spokesperson for girls’ rights to education ".

The Nobel Committee regards it as an important point for a Hindu and a Muslim, an Indian and a Pakistani, to join in a common struggle for education and against extremism. The award has been declared at the time, when Pakistan is shelling mortars on Indian residential colonies. On Thursday, India had warned Pakistan that it would pay an "unaffordable price for its adventurism".

Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif held a meeting with the top ministers and military chiefs, and his office said in a statement that they had, "stressed the fact that both countries are aware of each other's capabilities. War is not an option. It is shared responsibility of the leadership of both countries to immediately diffuse the situation." Hope Pakistan will learn a lesson & will start respecting the humanity.

Brief Note on Guidelines under DERC (Net Metering for Renewable Energy) Regulations, 2014

On 2nd of September, 2014, Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission had issued DERC (Net Metering for Renewable Energy) Regulations, 2014 to promote use of Renewable Energy Generation for Self Consumption. For effective and proper implementation of these Regulations, the Commission has formulated guidelines elaborating minimum transformer level capacity that must be offered for connectivity, procedural requirements for obtaining connectivity, technical requirement of the Renewable Energy System, mechanism for billing, accounting adjustment (both in terms of net off as well as in financial terms). The broad features of these guidelines are:

Procedure for declaring Distribution Transformer (DT) Level
 DT level capacity to be offered for Connecting Renewable Energy System shall not be less than 20% of the rated capacity of respective DT. However, the Commission may assess the DT level capacity through an independent agency – This will protect Consumer’s interest.

Procedure for Application, Registration & Connectivity
 Formats for Application and Registration have been appended with the guidelines.
 For initial application, a fee of Rs. 500/- has been prescribed.
 The Connectivity shall be provided on First cum First serve basis subject to Feasibility Analysis including operational and capacity constraints.
 If due to any reason, Distribution Licensee is unable to offer connectivity for all or part of the capacity applied by the Consumer, it shall seek prior approval of the Commission for not providing connectivity or offering connectivity for a reduced capacity and refund the application fee at Consumer’s option within 7 days of receipt of intimation regarding non availability of capacity for connectivity or within 7 days of the expiry of 180 days period from the date of application.
 The guidelines provide that the Distribution Licensee, at the time of giving intimation regarding connectivity, shall also give the Registration form along-with details of documentation and clearances required.
 The Consumer shall submit the Registration form for connectivity of Renewable Energy System along with the requisite fee.
 In the interest of the Consumer, a mechanism of preliminary check, in the presence of the applicant / his authorized representative at the time of submission of the Registration Form with a further provision of intimating the deficiencies in the submitted form and personal hearing has been provided for prior to its rejection. All such rejections have to be under intimation to the Commission.
 The guidelines also prescribe the time lines for various activities associated with submission of Application, undertaking feasibility analysis for connectivity, Registration and implementation including execution of Connection Agreement.
 Interconnectivity standards, safety, theft and tempering of meters shall be governed as per the relevant Acts and Regulations.

Billing, Accounting and Payment
 The electricity consumption for Consumers falling under Time of Day (ToD) tariff structure shall be first compensated with the electricity generation in the similar time blocks in the same billing cycle only and any surplus generation carried forward to the next billing cycle shall be set off against consumption during off-peak period and for set off against other time blocks, same shall be moderated as per the relevant rebate/surcharge percentage of ToD tariff applicable for the relevant year. For better understanding, sample calculations have also been provided in the Guidelines in this regard.
 The Consumer shall be paid for net energy credits which remain unadjusted at the end of the financial year at the rate of Average Power Purchase Cost (APPC) of the Distribution Licensee.

Apologies, from Flipkart

Dear Customer,

Yesterday was a big day for us. And we really wanted it to be a great day for you. But at the end of the day, we know that your experience was less than pleasant. We did not live up to the promises we made and for that we are really and truly sorry.

It took enormous effort from everyone at Flipkart, many months of preparation and pushing our capabilities and systems to the limit to be able to create this day. We were looking at fulfilling the dreams of millions of Indian consumers through deals and offers we had painstakingly put together for months.

And though we saw unprecedented interest in our products and traffic like never before, we also realized that we were not adequately prepared for the sheer scale of the event. We didn't source enough products and deals in advance to cater to your requirements. To add to this, the load on our server led to intermittent outages, further impacting your shopping experience on our site.

An unprecedented 1.5 million people shopped at Flipkart yesterday. While we stand humbled by the sheer faith that such a large number of customers have shown in us, we are unhappy that we were unable to live up to the expectations of millions more who wanted to buy from us yesterday.

And this is not acceptable to us.

Delighting you, and every single one of our customers, is absolutely the top most priority for Flipkart and we have worked very hard over the last seven years to earn your trust. Yesterday, we failed that trust. We have learnt some valuable lessons from this and have started working doubly hard to address all the issues that cropped up during this sale.

Price Changes As we were preparing various deals and promotional pricing in the lead up to the sale, the pricing of several products got changed to their non-discounted rates for a few hours. We realise that this breaks the trust our customers have put in us. We are truly sorry for this and will ensure that this never happens again.

Out-of-stock Issues We ran out of the stock for many products within a few minutes (and in some cases, seconds) of the sale going live. For example, most of our special deals were sold out as soon as they went live. We had ensured availability, anywhere from hundreds to a few lakh units for various products, but it was nowhere near the actual demand. We promise to plan much better for future promotions and ensure that we minimise the out-of-stock issues.

Cancellations We had large number of people buying specific products simultaneously. This led to some instances of an order getting over-booked for a product that was sold out just a few seconds ago. We are working round-the-clock to ensure availability of additional units for these products and will do our level best to ensure that we minimise any cancellations.

Website Issues We realise that the shopping experience for many of you was frustrating due to errors and unavailability of the website at times. We had deployed nearly 5000 servers and had prepared for 20 times the traffic growth - but the volume of traffic at different times of the day was much higher than this. We are continuing to significantly scale up all our back end systems so that we do a much, much better job next time.

Everything that we have achieved at Flipkart is purely on the basis of our customer's trust and faith. This is why we come to work each day and continue to remain extremely passionate about building the best possible customer experience for Indian consumers. We failed to live up to this promise yesterday and would like to apologise once again to every single customer for our failure.

Thank you.
Sachin and Binny

Oops! Something went wrong with the so called Mega online Sale !

Though I knew about the well advertised, mega online sales that it will start at 8 am on 6th of Oct, I skipped it in the morning. I saw the news paper at almost 9.30 am, & rushed to my computer in a minute.

Shockingly ! what ever  attractive items with Flat 90% off, that were advertised in Newspaper were all sold out. It seemed a big loss to me & my daughter, but we kept on trying.

Soon we found Nokia X - Bright Red in the STEAL DEAL with Flat 90% off. Without even looking into the Configuration, we just clicked to put it in our Cart as the Mobile of 6999 was available at just 10% of the price. We clicked, clicked, clicked but it never reached to our cart & the next message was that it was Out of Stock.

Being brave in nature, we again tried to locate something. Soon we found the Milagrow MGPTO7 Pro Tablet, again with Flat 90% off. Seemed a Great deal. We clicked to add it to our cart. But the Error message was  : Oops! Something went wrong. We are looking into this. You may try again. But the minute we tried again, it was Out of Stock.

Still not disheartened, my daughter tried again & found a fresh deal of  XOLO QC 800 Tablet with 90% off. It said : BEFORE 13,499 /- , Now 1,350. She clicked & surprisingly, it reached to our cart. We added a Pen too, to our cart, costing Rs 400 @ Rs 240. We clicked & both were there in the Cart. We decided to place the Order.

We filled form & placed the order. But the Xolo Tablet, automatically vanished from the order form & there remained only a Pen.  That page showed a Toll Free number to contact in case of any help required. We dialled that number to speak to the Customer care persons, but the automated reply said, the number you are dialling, does not Exist. We had no other option, but to cancel the order immediately.

Now we are looking for someone, who could really buy something from this great mega online sales. If anyone of you could really buy something from this mega sales, just let us know so that we can change our mind that it was not more than a Fools Paradise.

Power Tariff may go up in November as DERC has to review Fuel surcharge

Power tariff in Delhi may go up next month as Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission ( DERC ) is all set to review the fuel surcharge to help the private distribution companies adjust their power purchase cost.

Strange & Shocking ! It has become a routine for the Discoms to ask a hike from DERC & DERC is always willing to oblige.

According to DERC, the private discoms operating in the city have a revenue gap of a whopping Rs 19,500 crore. But how DERC can accept this undertaking when there is no CAG AUDIT of Discoms.

Strange, DISCOMs don't come under RTI, they are not co-operating for CAG Audit, but they want the Public of Delhi to believe, that, they are getting losses.

As per official figures, around 80-90 per cent of total revenue of discoms goes into purchasing power from central and state government owned entities through long term power purchase agreement, at rates determined by the central and state regulators.

The experts ( ? ) say that the cost of buying power from generating companies has increased by around 300 per cent in the last two years while the power tariff, in the corresponding period, has risen by around 70 per cent.

It seems this has become a vicious cycle where things are just rotating in one direction i.e. hike after another hike.

Delhiites have already seen a series of hikes in power tariff : the tariff was hiked by 22 per cent in 2011 followed by five per cent hike in February 2012. The tariff was hiked by up to two per cent in May 2012 year and again by 26 per cent for domestic consumers in July 2012. The tariff was hiked by up to three per cent in February last year and again by five per cent in August last.

The experts must note that DELHIITES ARE NOT WILLING TO BEAR ANY MORE BURDEN ON THE NAME OF POWER TARIFF, TILL THE DISCOMs GET AUDITED UNDER THE CAG, AND TILL THE CAG REPORT IS RELEASED.

Awaiting comments of our most valued readers.
