Road Tax On Vehicles To Be Hiked, Move To Check Rising Number Of Private Vehicles In City

Delhiites will now have to shell out more on cars and bikes. The Delhi government will on Wednesday notify the cabinet's decision to increase road tax on such vehicles to generate additional revenue. Delhi cabinet had given the go-ahead to the fee hike on May 24 to generate more revenue from road tax and to discourage the use of private vehicles. On an average, nearly 1,000 new vehicles are registered in the capital every day.

 

As per the revised road tax norms, those buying two-wheelers costing up to Rs 25,000 will have to pay the existing rate of 2% while two-wheelers in the price range of Rs 25,000 to Rs 40,000 will attract a road tax of 4%. Two-wheelers exceeding Rs 40,000 will be charged 6% as road tax, sources said.

Similarly, for cars costing up to Rs 6 lakh, the tax has been increased to 4% from the existing 2%, while cars in the price range between Rs 6 lakh and Rs 10 lakh will attract 7% road tax. In case of cars costing above Rs 10 lakh the road tax will be 10%. The registration rates of public carrier vehicles, however, will remain the same.

Lane-Change Trials This Month

From the third week of June, motorists would do well to heed the directions and the advice of the Delhi traffic police.or else chaos and confusing would rule the capital's roads.

 

The traffic police are beginning trials on some of the busiest road stretches in South Delhi to prepare for the final task of changing 36 driving lanes on the `Games route' - from the airport to the Games Village in east Delhi - during the Commonwealth Games.

 

R. Narayanaswami, Special Adviser, Commonwealth Games, recently proposed 36 different lane changes on the `Games route' in his presentation on `Lane Reservation for CWG Traffic'. The Lt Governor of Delhi has approved the plan.

Narayanaswami said: "Lane reservation has been proposed in a bid to facilitate movement of all important transportation to Games related venues by movement on lanes reserved for such traffic."

But the Delhi Traffic Police (DTP) fear the lane change will badly affect traffic movement on the Games route.

New Unauthorised Colonies In Delhi To Be Demolished

Properties in new unauthorised colonies and fresh constructions in illegal colonies awaiting regularisation by the government will be demolished, the Delhi cabinet decided Monday.

The cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit also warned the officials who allow the unauthorised colonies to come up that from now on deputy commissioners of revenue department and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, deputy commissioner of police and police station house Officer of the area concerned will also not be spared.

'We have taken special permission from the lieutenant governor (LG) office to punish these erring officials. Regularisation of around 1,639 unauthorised colonies is under consideration of the government, but no new constructions will be allowed in these areas too, the violation of which will result in demolition,' Revenue Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan told reporters.

The cabinet decision came after it came to the government's notice that unauthorised colonies are coming up in large numbers. The government has also taken note of recent cases of misuse of agricultural land in Narela and other areas, where some government officials in nexus with builders had sold the plots to some buyers.

'The state anti-corruption bureau (ACB) has in Narela registered a first information report (FIR) against some 12 builders and government officials for selling plots to unsuspecting buyers,' Chauhan said.

If you receive a message called Black in the White House even if sent by a friend, do not open, and shut down your machine immediately.  It is the worst virus announced by CNN.  This  new virus has been discovered recently  &  it has been classified by Microsoft as the virus most destructive ever.

 

This virus was discovered yesterday afternoon by McAfee.  There is no repair yet for this kind of virus.  This virus simply destroys the Zero Sector of the hard disk, where vital information function is stored.

Delhi's Environment Problems Are Not Going To Be Solved, Policy Change Needed To Check Air Pollution

The report on environment accepts that Delhi's air pollution problems are not going to be solved unless major policy-level interventions are made. The city has an estimated 60 lakh vehicles plying on its road and even though the road network has increased considerably in the last few years, the road space per vehicle has come down. A study on auto fuel in 2002 showed that Delhi topped the list of eight major Indian cities with maximum vehicular emissions.

Industries are another major source of air pollution in the capital. The city houses various factories for production of food, textiles, chemicals, metals, rubber and plastic. The report suggests the city's growing population, expected to touch 185 lakh by 2011 and 244 lakh by 2021, is a primary challenge as the government battles to contain the level of pollution.

 

Diesel consumption, which had come down after the conversion of public transport to CNG, has gone up again due to the sharp rise in number of vehicles. Consequently, levels of oxides of nitrogen, particulate matter and respirable particulate matter contributed by roadside dust, auto exhaust and burning of coal, have been much higher than permissible limits. Only sulphur levels have come down, mainly due to less sulphur content in fuel.

Sheila Dikshit Favours Increasing Power, Water Tariff To Prevent Wastage

Pitching for serious efforts to conserve scarce resources, chief minister Sheila Dikshit today favoured increasing the tariff on power and water to prevent their wastage.

Dikshit, while speaking at a function to mark the World Environment Day, identified limiting consumption of energy and water as main challenges facing the city and appealed to citizens and government agencies to make serious efforts to conserve them.

Addressing the gathering, IPCC chief RK Pachauri suggested increasing the tariff on power and water to make people understand the value of the scarce resources.

"We will have to take serious efforts to save the environment. We will have to control wastage of water and power. If the solution to limit consumption of water and power lies in increasing the tariff as suggested by Pachauri then we support it," Dikshit said.

The chief minister, who also flagged off a rally featuring battery operated cars, herself drove a Reva car from her 3, Motilal Nehru Marg official residence to the NDMC Commonwealth Garden in Africa Avenue.

The chief minister said the rising population in the city has put a lot of pressure on its scarce resources.

She said 42% of the total water distributed by the Delhi Jal Board goes waste.

Get-well-soon SMSes flood MCD's 'sick dept'

The resident welfare association of Lajpat Nagar III in South Delhi has found a unique way to voice its angst against the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).

Exasperated by failed attempts to get the civic body to repair two water pumps that supply water to the colony's parks, the residents are now SMSing 'get well soon' messages in bulk to senior officials of the MCD.

"It seems the horticulture department of Lajpat Nagar III is sick. Please send a 'Get Well Soon' SMS to the following phone numbers," the message reads.

MCD's horticulture director SS Khandpal confirmed he'd received the SMS.

"The water level was quite low because of which this happened. We will be getting them (the pumps) repaired within two days," he said.

The association has also been spreading the message among residents of other colonies asking them to forward the SMS to the officials concerned.

On Sunday, mobile phones of a number of MCD officials were flooded with the SMSes bordering on Gandhigiri — unusual and endearing non-violent forms of protest inspired by Hindi movie Munnabhai MBBS.
