NEW DELHI: In a bid to streamline traffic at Lajpat Nagar, Defence Colony and Jangpura, the Delhi High Court has made MCD and traffic police officials accountable to the local RWA for removing encroachments from roads.
"The president and secretary of the associations shall also be called for the meetings held between MCD and Delhi Police officers. These meetings should be held at least once a month under intimation to the office bearers," the HC specified in its order.
The court gave the instructions after realizing that little progress has been made in streamlining traffic despite its intervention. The court made it clear that on receiving complaints by the residents of the area through their respective RWAs, the officers must respond immediately and take action as per law.
According to the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act and the Delhi Police Act, both authorities can respectively sieze, seal or penalize shops found to be encroaching on public land. HC was hearing a batch of petitions filed by Defence Colony Flyover Complex Welfare Association, the Jangpura RWA and the Lajpat Nagar RWA.
